VAM\u00a0is a women\u2019s rights activist who focuses on clashes between\u00a0liberation and archaic attitudes, on the contradictions between the\u00a0apparent emancipation of women in our society and the weight of\u00a0stereotypes which still imprison them.<\/p>\n
Shaken\u00a0up by the works of Louise Bourgeois, Annette Messager and Nan Goldin\u00a0as well as by the conditions and paradoxes in which\u00a0women around her\u00a0live, she explores these ruptures in a production dealing with\u00a0intimacy, between violence and sensuality.<\/p>\n
By\u00a0using a variety of materials and techniques, notably photography, she\u00a0repeatedly resorts to the principle of sewing\/suture and hijacks\u00a0the\u00a0codes of ornamentation in favor of \u201cnicely subversive\u201d\u00a0evocations. Around the myths of \u201cthe virgin and the whore\u201d or of\u00a0\u201cwoman as\u00a0object\u201d, VAM creates a universe which is as delicate as\u00a0it is disturbing in order to reveal the strange alchemy of a sex or\u00a0gender that is\u00a0both worshipped and scorned, honored and humiliated.<\/p>\n
